Katie and Ryan

Another city, another airport and another interview!   This time I met a brother and sister from Long Island in Delta’s Lounge at LAX.  Ryan is 11 yrs. old and his older sister, Katie, is 13 yrs. old.  Both kids were a delight to interview.  Enjoy!

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Ryan – I love it! Traveling is just a good experience.

Katie – Yes. I get to go somewhere else and it is fun to go on a plane.

What is your favorite part about traveling? Least favorite part?

Ryan – (Fav.) Just having fun.  (Least) The plane rides.

Katie – My favorite part is when you get to the place that you are visiting and you get to be there for a long time and do fun stuff.  I don’t like take-off’s in airplanes…It is so scary!

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

Ryan – Rome, Italy. I don’t know. I just loved it. We jumped off a lot of cliffs and stuff.  We also saw the ruins which was nice.

Katie – Italy because it is really pretty and nice there.  And cool.  I loved seeing the Coliseum and the leaning Tower of Pisa.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Why?

Ryan – Bora Bora. My friends talk about it and they say it is cool and I saw pictures of it and it looks amazing.

Katie – I want to go back to Italy.  It was a cruise the first time, so I would make it a really long trip, like 1 month.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Ryan – Summer is the best time for travel and 2 weeks would be good.

Katie – Like 2 weeks.  So it is long and you can do more, but you don’t have to rush.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

Ryan – Electronics.  PSP is my favorite.

Katie – My computer.  I go online and talk to my friends. No matter where I am, I can talk to my friends.

What kind of vacation is your favorite; ie. camping, hotel, house exchange, safari?

Ryan – Tropical is my favorite. Just like relaxing and stuff.

Katie – Beach or pool! If I could stay in the water all day….I would!

What advice do you have for other kids that travel?

Ryan – Don’t think about anything else—just have fun.

Katie – Pack stuff that would keep you from getting bored, so you will have something to do at all times while you are waiting around.

What advice do you have for parents who want to take their child traveling?

Ryan – Try to travel more often.

Katie – Instead of doing what they want to do all the time, maybe one day ask us what we want to do.

Who is your favorite person or people to travel with?

Ryan – My big sister.  We always do stuff together.

Katie – My family.

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

Ryan – That you cant do anything better than travel. It is just the best time of your life.

Katie – Facts about places that are foreign to me. There are always new things to learn.

When you are older, do you think you will travel more with work or on vacation?  What kind of job do you think you might enjoy?

Ryan – Business mostly. I will be a baseball player and play for the Yankees.  Then I could travel for fun as well.

Katie – Travel for fun.  I want to be a teacher (2nd grade).  And then I could travel during the summer.

What has traveling taught you?

Ryan - Traveling it is better than everything else.  You should try it.

Katie – When I was little, I was afraid of flying and planes.  Now, I am much braver and not as scared.  I have also learned to trust the people that I travel with.

Tyler and Me on Top of Mammoth Mountain

I spent a week with my family in Mammoth Lakes last week and had a blast.  I was thrilled to meet my new nephew, Tristan (2 months old) and spend some time with my 9 year old nephew, Tyler.  On our ride home from Mammoth, I asked Tyler these questions about travel.

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Yes. I like to enjoy nature and spend time with my family.

What is your favorite part about traveling? Least favorite part?

Hanging out with my family. The part I don’t like about traveling is going into forests with bears.  It’s kind of spooky.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

Disneyland because it has my favorite rides like Indiana Jones.  Next time, when I go to Disneyland I am going to go on Space Mountain.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Why?

I would go to Egypt.  They have temples there and I’d like to see a temple.  I would like to find trap doors and old things inside.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Since we enjoy Tehachapi (our home) so much, I think being away for 5 or 6 days is perfect.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

I like to bring transformers because they transform into things and I pretend they go on adventures in my imagination.

What kind of vacation is your favorite; ie. camping, hotel, house exchange, safari?

I like staying in a condo.  It is like my house but not.  Every room is new to me and it’s warm inside.  I also like camping at the beach with my grandparents.

What advice do you have for other kids that travel?

I would tell them to go camping.  It is so fun. You get to see new places and play outside.

Who is your favorite person or people to travel with?

I’d say my cousins because they are really fun to be with.

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

I learn about new places and find out new things to do.

When you are older, do you think you will travel more with work or on vacation?  What kind of job do you think you might enjoy?

I think I would travel more with vacation and not have a job that makes me travel all around the world.  I could hang out with my family a lot and not have to work away from home.  I would like to work in fitness or be a fireman or work in an office.

What has traveling taught you?

Traveling has taught me that new places are interesting and really fun.  I can have fun being with family and it teaches me new things about places I’ve never heard of.

Stella - Photo taken by her dad

Hooray for another kid Q&A!  I have been getting great feedback on these interviews and you are asking for more….so here’s another.

I interviewed Stella in New York City during a playdate at our house.  She and Charles have been buddies since they were born.  While eating snack, Stella took time to really think about the questions and her answers are some of my favorite so far.  Stella is proud to be 6 ¾ yrs old.

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Yes because I get to see new things and I like to meet new people.   My habit is every time I go to a new place, I make 2 new friends.  Each of my 2 new friends show me around a little bit of their favorite places.  Then I try 2 new things and 2 kinds of foods.

What is your favorite part about traveling? Least favorite part?

My favorite part about traveling is I get to go on a plane and I get to see some clouds from above and one time I was traveling to Paris and I think I saw an angel outside of the window.  She had a pretty face and wore a white dress…she smiled and said hi to me. She was quite petite.  So, I know she is always in the clouds looking down and watching me. (Least favorite) I don’t like all the waiting.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

Paris because there is a very nice park and one of my very best friends go there and we have a playdate together.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Why?

I would go to India because I’ve never seen an elephant and there are lots of animals there and they do beautiful dances there that I would like to see.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Like 5 minutes.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

My iTouch.

What kind of vacation is your favorite; ie. camping, hotel, house exchange, safari?

I would choose a resort because I would like to go to the Nickolodeon resort with Spongebob square pants and all of the nick friends.

What advice do you have for other kids that travel?

If you are going to dinner or something, it will be okay because the food will be really yummy. Just try it.

What advice do you have for parents who want to take their child traveling?

Just go…travel take your kids. Because I want them to find out things for themselves.

Who is your favorite person or people to travel with?

My friend, Charles

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

I learn to say hi to other people even though I don’t know them.  I learn to be friendly.  I learn things from people because I ask questions.

When you are older, do you think you will travel more with work or on vacation?  What kind of job do you think you might enjoy?

Vacation, because you just get to relax.

What has traveling taught you?

It has taught me to be brave.

Air France First Class Lounge - Paris Charles de Gaulle

Airline Delays….they happen.  Best scenario: you are ‘stuck’ in the first class Air France lounge for 4 hours.  This happened to us last week and we were well aware of our cushy predicament.  Surrounded by extravagance, we sat back and waited with no complaints.  What did we do?  We ate, played Lego, got a massage, ate again, explored, and I interviewed 2 brothers who were on our same delayed flight.

Could Have Even Taken a Nap!

The boys were enthralled with their shiny new iPads and didn’t seem to notice the hours tick by.  Jack was the older brother, who wanted to be called Ninja Platypus Four (which I’m assuming is a character from one of his video games).  Dash, the younger brother, took time with each answer and was never short on words.  Both boys were a delight to interview and never complained about the delay…they were pros, pros with iPads in the first class lounge.

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Jack, 11 yr old : Yes. Well it depends kinda….I like the places we go, but there’s a lot of waiting in travel.

Dash, 10 yr old : Yes, I enjoy it.  It’s fun. And we travel a lot!  We do a lot of touring and learning.  I learn about history when we travel. And I like history.

What is your favorite part about traveling? least favorite part?

Jack, 11 yr old : My favorite is being at the places that we are visiting and flying on planes.  I don’t like waiting or having to go through all of the stuff….like taking out my computer or iPad when I go through airport security or a delay like this.  Not fun.

Dash, 10 yr old : It’s nice to have a change of scenery. My least favorite is jet lag! I get so tired and can’t sleep when I’m supposed to.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

Jack, 11 yr old : Oh, that’s hard…probably New Zealand.  There were a lot of sports and people with painted faces and trees and things. And there weren’t too many historical places that we had to go see.

Dash, 10 yr old : I don’t know my favorite, but we go to a few places every year (Antibes, California, and Paris). We used to live in Antibes and London.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Why?

Jack, 11 yr old : I would probably go to Brazil.  I hear a lot about it, but have never been there.  Or I could say India or Egypt.

Dash, 10 yr old : I do want to go to Dubai (my uncle is moving there). Also, China or Russia because they have a bunch of history I’d like to learn.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Jack, 11 yr old : Maybe 10 days.  So it still is kinda long, but doesn’t get boring.

Dash, 10 yr old : It depends where I’m going….. actually 1 week for one place and then keep moving.  I could do that week after week after week, and keep seeing new places. Up to 1 year. That sounds exciting.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

Jack, 11 yr old : IPad, iPod, and ummm that’s pretty much it.

Dash, 10 yr old : It was my computer, but now my iPad.

What kind of vacation is your favorite; ie. camping, hotel, house exchange, safari?

Jack, 11 yr old : A mix…you could stay in a resort in a place and go on a safari.  Do both.

Dash, 10 yr old : I like it all….but I’ll tell you I don’t want to do another safari anytime soon.  Last time we went on safari, we got attacked by a crazy elephant.  Its’ tusk went into the front windshield.  We had to shoot it…well we didn’t, but the guy driving the truck use to be a hunter, so he knew what to do.  We were lucky…he was the only one on the reserve who would have known what to do.  It wasn’t my best experience.

What advice do you have for other kids that travel?

Jack, 11 yr old : Bring food and a screen (like video games, or computer, or iPad) and such, so it doesn’t get boring.

Dash, 10 yr old : I don’t know…traveling is carefree, you don’t have to worry about things because your parents do it all….you just have to enjoy it.

What advice do you have for parents who want to take their child traveling?

Jack, 11 yr old : Let your kids use their screens as much as they want (because my mom doesn’t like when I look at a screen too much).

Dash, 10 yr old : Don’t be late (my mom is always late). It is so annoying.

Who is your favorite person or people to travel with?

Jack, 11 yr old : My brother because he doesn’t get me in trouble.  He is always on my side.

Dash, 10 yr old : I’m always with my mom and brother, so I don’t know anything else.

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

Jack, 11 yr old : I learn a lot about different countries and stuff….history, new good apps to use when you are in a new place, and get to stay in new cool hotels.

Dash, 10 yr old : History mostly.

When you are older, do you think you will travel more with work or on vacation?  What kind of job do you think you might enjoy?

Jack, 11 yr old : Vacation I hope…it’s a lot funner.  Well it depends…I want to make lots of money.  Can it be something that doesn’t exist?….like a video game tester, a professional traveler that tells people where to go and things to do, a food tester…those things.

Dash, 10 yr old : I think both.  I don’t really know yet, but I have time to figure it out….a lot of time actually. (laughs)

What has traveling taught you?

Jack, 11 yr old : I have learned a lot about other places.  And that it [traveling] gets easier…the more you travel the more you understand and the easier it is….you learn how not to be bored or go crazy on family trips.

Dash, 10 yr old : Knowledge.  It has given me a lot of historical knowledge. We do a lot of touring.

Canal Cruising in Amsterdam

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : Yes, because it is fun and you get to buy something.

Charles, 6 yr. old : Yes, because it is fun.  We stay in different hotels every time.

Owen, 7 yr. old : Yes, because you can go to fun places. Well also no, because sometimes things are boring.

What is your favorite part about traveling? least favorite part?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : I like to play, like at Legoland.  I don’t like to travel when I can’t bring a computer.

Charles, 6 yr. old : My favorite part is to get to see so many places.  I don’t like it when sometimes my parents have to work when we travel.

Owen, 7 yr. old :  I especially like to travel to places that have water because I like to swim.  And I like to see how other places look, besides NY.  I don’t like that I can’t play doodle jump that much when we travel.  Also, that my mom doesn’t pay attention to me because she is talking to other people.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : My favorite place is Amsterdam because I got to eat pancakes on a boat and play in a ball pit.

Charles, 6 yr. old : Legoland in Los Angeles, because it is full of Legos!

Owen, 7 yr. old : Legoland in Los Angeles, because it is really fun.  I am going to Legoland in Denmark and staying there for a night.  I am so excited.  There is also a Lego shop and I get to buy something.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Why?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : I would go to an amusement park because it is really cool to play games and go on rides because I am 4 now.

Charles, 6 yr. old : India because there aren’t many cars and stuff. And that is where my dad is from.

Owen, 7 yr. old : Even in an imaginary world? I would go to an imaginary place and meet people…there would be an invisible bathroom and a bed that pops out of nowhere when you are tired.  It would be called NothingWorld.  And also there would be lots of palm trees, alligators, and cows.  Basically I would do anything I would like to for as long as I want.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : Like 100 days.

Charles, 6 yr. old : 1 or 2 weeks I think.

Owen, 7 yr. old : If it was good, probably a week.  Like Legoland or my country house.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : Lego, they are called mini-figures that I like. I love play with them.

Charles, 6 yr. old : Lego!

Owen, 7 yr. old : Like Lego and other stuff.

What kind of vacation is your favorite; ie. camping, hotel, house exchange?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : Hotels are awesome.

Charles, 6 yr. old : Hotels because they have neat furniture and it is always a new one.

Owen, 7 yr. old : Well, I like staying in a house, especially in California.

What advice do you have for other kids that travel?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : Have a good day.

Charles, 6 yr. old : Bring a lot of stuff to keep you comforted, like card games, toys, stuffed animals, and ugly dolls.

Owen, 7 yr. old : Well, it is fun to travel and don’t be scared of new places. You should probably see California and if you aren’t from NY, go there because the houses are great and my mom said they always have the best food there.

Who is your favorite person or people to travel with?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : My brother is my favorite person to travel with.

Charles, 6 yr. old : My mom and my dad.

Owen, 7 yr. old : My mom, my dad and my brother, except sometimes he is annoying.  Like I was sleeping in bed this morning and the pillow was so comfortable (I never felt like waking up), but my brother was sitting at the edge of the bed trying to wake me up! And he was being really annoying.  Like that.

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

Beckett, 4 yr. old : I learn about how to use goggles.

Charles, 6 yr. old : That each place has a different landscape, sometimes there are boats, trams, bicycles and cars.  Each place has a different flag. There are different roadsigns and languages.  It is cool because it is new and when I go somewhere new, it is fun.

Owen, 7 yr. old : I learn that every place is different. And I also learned in Sweden to never doubt your mom, because she was right about something (I won’t tell you what it is, but she was right).

When you are older, do you think you will travel more with work or on vacation?  What kind of job do you think you might enjoy?

Charles, 6 yr. old : Definitely vacation and I will bring my family with me.  I would like to be a photographer maybe.

Owen, 7 yr. old : I hope I will travel more with vacation than work.  Being a director or a writer or a person that makes lego.com would be my choice.

What has traveling taught you?

Charles, 6 yr. old : It is always a new adventure.

Owen, 7 yr. old : If you always stayed where you lived, you wouldn’t learn about other places and other languages.  If you are worried about travel, you should try it and never doubt a person who tells you that a place is great, unless it is a stranger, because you shouldn’t listen to them.
