Joseph's Picture of His Traveling Circus Story- written in Polish

I know it has been awhile since I posted another kid interview.  Fortunately for you, this one was worth waiting for.

Charles and I met young Joseph in NYC (his mom is a model and had a job in the city with Charles’ parents).  I was struck by how mature Joseph seemed and how easily he took to both Charles and I.  The boys hit it off and we planned to meet up in Paris (his home) when we were in France.  Today, the boys were elbow deep in Lego, and during a lull, I snagged Joseph for a brief chat.

Joseph is 6 1/2 years old.  He was very concerned that I included the half, since he is no longer simply six.  He lives in Paris with his mom.  He speaks French, Polish and English fluently.  Oozing with confidence and never short on words, he loved our little ‘research’ moment and was pleased that we had something in common: we both were writing books about travel.

Do you like to travel?

We travel a lot since my mom is a model.  It is very cool to see new places and I get to visit my dog and dad in Poland and my friends when we go to Los Angeles.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to?

The Grand Canyon!  It was so beautiful.  We went up in the biggest helicopter I have ever been on–it had 8 seats, not just 4!  We also went up to see it in a hot air balloon.  It is the most interesting place I have ever been to.

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

When I fly by myself, I get to meet the captain and ask what all of the buttons are for in the cockpit and how the computers fly the plane.  I learn a lot about airplanes this way.  Also, when I wait, I look out the window at the airport and watch the people put the bags in the planes and driving around important things.

What advice do you have for other kids who are traveling?

Pack light.  Do not try to put too many toys or things to do in your bag.  The problem is: it is too heavy and you spend more time playing with the things that you already have at home and can’t enjoy the place where you are.  Spend less time on your computer or iPad and learn about the place you traveled to.

What advice do you have for parents who plan to take their kids traveling with them?

Don’t lose your kid.

How is traveling similar or different to a school field trip?

On a field trip, you can’t do anything you want or go to another museum if you don’t like the one you are in, so it is less fun than traveling.  But a field trip is more fun in some ways because you are with all of your friends.

What has traveling taught you?

Travel has given me an idea for a book my dad and I are writing.  I want to show it to you, but it is on my dad’s computer in Poland.  (Joseph runs to his room to find his sketchpad/journal to show me pictures of his characters.) It is about a boy named Nulils.  He and his parents work at a traveling circus.  His dad is a clown and his mom is a tightrope-walker.  Nulils has a trick.  A matchbox full of lice (not sure with the translation if he means fleas, but it is his story, so I say nothing) that he uses a magnifying glass and a projector to show the audience on a big screen the lice doing their tricks (Joseph laughs at this thought). There is also a cat named Madame Miau Miau and then the nasty Maestro Abra Kadabra.  (Joseph goes on and on about his story and shows me so many sketches of lice and characters.  He is so proud of his work.  And, honestly, I’m impressed.)

Ophelia and Charlie

Poolside at the Amanjena Hotel in Marrakesh, I met two charming kids vacationing with their parents.  Ophelia (6 yrs old) and Charlie (7 yrs old) are a sister and brother from North Cotswold, England.  I had noticed them the day before in their adorable matching swimsuit jumpers and simply had to interview them.  Here are their responses.

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Ophelia – Medium. Because planes are noisy, but it’s fun once you get to the place you’re going.

Charlie – Sometimes because I do like staying at home.  Some places I like and some I don’t.

What is your favorite thing about travel?  Least favorite thing?

Ophelia – Swimming is my favorite, but going out somewhere like a museum that is really boring and you have to be quiet is not my favorite.

Charlie – I like to have a nice time, but I don’t like when things don’t go well.  Like this morning, I was walking on the tiles that were wet from the rain and I slipped and fell. I don’t like when unfortunate things happen when we travel.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled?

Ophelia – Scotland. We went for my granny’s birthday and my 3rd biggest cousin and I played and had so much fun together.

Charlie – Umbria, Italy because I had quite a lot of fun there.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?

Ophelia – Australia because I was born there, but I haven’t ever been back.

Charlie – Australia. I’ve been there like 5 times, but I don’t remember it because I was so young. Once my mom, dad and I went whale watching in a helicopter when my mom was pregnant with my sister in Australia, but I was so young and don’t remember it. We have only one picture of it.  I want to go back.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Ophelia – To go for my whole life and never have to go to school or go to work!  Holiday all the time.

Charlie – One day.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

Ophelia – I’d love to take my huge snow tiger called Tigger but it’s gi-normous! He comes up all the way to here (she says with her hand under her chin) but I can’t take it because it wont fit in my suitcase.  He would need an entire bag of his own. So I have to take my little teddies instead.

Charlie – Normally I choose what I want to bring, like lego and cars, and have to fit it all in a small bionicle box.

What kinds of things do you learn when you are traveling?

Ophelia – You can learn about different birds and what they do.  Or learn how to swim so you can have other opportunities to swim, like at parties with friends.

Charlie – You gain experience.  You know a lot about your own country you live in, but you don t know anything about others until you go there.  Here in Africa, we may think their houses are strange, but if they came to England, they would think our houses looked strange.

Who is your favorite person to travel with?

Ophelia – My friends because they always give us presents for taking them with us.

Charlie – My dog.

What kind of vacation is your favorite?

Ophelia – Everything put together! (she says with a toothy grin)  A campsite with a fancy pool in the woods and a wooden room all to my own on the beach.  In my room, I’d like a wee fridge and in the fridge are all fizzy drinks and sweets just for me.

Charlie – I like places that are warm and nice, but you never know what the weather is going to do.  Like yesterday and that thundershower.  We were in the markets and my shoes and socks got soaking wet.  When I took off my shoes there was a puddle of wetness.

What advice do you have for kids?

Ophelia – Bring a computer because you can play on it if you have nothing to do or send an email to your friends.

Charlie – You can’t always be certain about a place before you visit it.  You might not expect what it truly is. The place could be bad or it could be amazing when you think it will be boring.

What advice do you have for parents that take their kids traveling?

Ophelia – Always bring your own towels.

Charlie – I’d tell my parents to start bringing our pet dog, Beach. We’ve had him since he was so tiny.

When you are older, will you travel more for work or pleasure?

Ophelia -  Work.  My job would be to ride a horse and rescue people on that horse.  That would be grand.

Charlie – Work. I might not marry.  I just don’t want to. I just don’t. I don’t like girls too much. I may work in engineering and travel, but not do something like diving because if you dive too deep, maybe past 30 meters, you get crushed!

What has traveling taught you?

Ophelia – I’ve learned to stuff lots of things, like all the toys and teddies that I want bring, inside my little suitcase.

Charlie – I’ve learned basically people live quite differently than us, but do some things the same, like eat food and have language. We all get dressed in the morning and go to sleep at night.  We are basically the same.

Noa and Her Lavender Carry-On

I interviewed Noa, a 9-year old girl, in the Atlanta Airport.  She was traveling with her grandmother and younger sister.

With a notebook and pen in her hand, she sat with her knees drawn into her chest.  She peered over her bent knees from time to time watching passing travelers and then busily scribbled notes or drawings (I suspect) into her pink notebook.  At her feet lay a neatly packed lavender carry-on holding her prized travel possessions that she riffled through with fervent determination.  I was struck by her attentiveness and quiet confidence in such a frenzied place.  She was thrilled to participate in the interview and was very generous with her responses.

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Yes.  I love to read and I am interested in a country’s history.  I love to know about the kings and queens that once lived in the places that I visit.

What is your favorite thing about travel?  Least favorite thing?

Going to museums is my favorite.  I don’t like when we walk around a city and my mom wants to stop at every store to buy something.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled?

Paris.  I saw the Louvre.  My favorite part was seeing the Mona Lisa.  I think she is smiling. And the Eiffel Tower; I loved the view!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?

I think Africa is interesting.  It would be wonderful to be out in nature and see animals in the wild.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

I don’t know….5 days.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

I usually bring paper and pen to draw.  A notebook to write about where I am, the things I see and write down my thoughts.

What kinds of things do you learn when you are traveling?

I learn how people live in other places.

Who is our favorite person to travel with?

My mom.  She likes to travel and she wakes up early like me. We wake up before everyone else and go see stuff early in the morning then come back around 9 to pick up my sister.

What kind of vacation is your favorite?

Camping. I get to live in nature and see how you can survive without a house and lots of extra things.

What advice do you have for kids?

I’d tell them to go to the capitol of the place they are going to visit, see the museums and study the history.

What advice do you have for parents that take their kids traveling?

For older kids, take them to interesting places like museums. For little kids, don’t try to do everything.  Keep it simple and go on a boat ride or something.

When you are older, will you travel more for work or pleasure?

Pleasure for sure.  I want to be a doctor

What has traveling taught you?

The best place is home.

Felice, Brant, Nick and Myself at the Cincinnati Airport

At the Cincinnati airport last Saturday, I interviewed a family who was killing time during a 3-hour layover to Boston.

The youngest, Felice (4 yr.old), volunteered to go first.  She was shy, but I could tell she’d be a chatterbox if we had more time together.  She leaned on her dad (Ryan) throughout the interview and cocked her head to the side with each answer, always checking in with dad before she answered.  ‘I don’t know’ was her first response to most of my questions, but she lit up when she got to talk about and introduce me to her beloved Mini Mouse.

Brant was 8 years old.  He was a bit more quiet than his sister and patiently listened to all of my questions.  He stared straight ahead throughout most of the interview, but when we did make eye contact, it was impossible not to be instantly drawn in with his gorgeous brown eyes and stunningly long eyelashes.

I ended the interview with older brother Nick who was 12 years old.  He told me that he’ll be 13 in October.  Nick was definitely the older brother.  He was well-spoken, protective of his siblings and nose-deep in a book when I met the family.  I instantly liked him.

Here are their responses to my travel questions:

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Felice -  Yeah, I like to travel because it is fun.

Brant -  Yeah it’s fun.

Nick -  Not really (he said with a grin). Well, I don’t know, it just gets boring and we travel a lot.

What is your favorite thing about travel?  Least favorite thing?

Felice -  Shopping at the airport.  Every time I go to an airport, I get a new book. (Least) All the waiting. I wish the plane was here waiting for me.

Brant -  Going into the woods and exploring. (Least) Getting there.  All the waiting in traveling isn’t so fun.  We have a 3-hr layover right now.  Not so fun.

Nick – Seeing new places. (Least) The travel. I don’t like how long it takes to get from one place to another.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled?

Felice -  Disneyworld. (She has been 3 times in her short 4 yrs. of life).

Brant –   Legoland in Florida.

Nick -  I like Cedar Point, Ohio. It ‘s full of great roller coasters. Millennium Force is great and has the biggest drop in the United States.  When we go as a family, my dad takes my brother and me on the big roller coasters and my mom takes my younger sister on the smaller rides.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go?

Felice -  I would love to sleep overnight at Cinderella’s castle.

Brant -  Going to my grandpa’s house because he gives me toys sometimes.

Nick -  The Bahamas sound really fun.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Felice -  A week.

Brant -  About….2 days.

Nick -  A 2-½ hr drive [tops] to get there and a week to stay.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

Felice –   I go everywhere with Mini Mouse. I sleep with her every night.

Brant –   A backpack.  Water.  My Lego Star Wars Book.

Nick –   My iPod and a book.

What kinds of things do you learn when you are traveling?

Felice -  I learn that I get very hungry, so I tell my dad to be sure to bring snacks.

Brant -  At school I learn a lot, but I don’t learn much when I travel.

Nick -  Well… you can learn about architecture in different places.

Who is our favorite person to travel with?

Brant -  My brother and my dad.

Nick -  My dad and my mom.

What kind of vacation is your favorite?

Nick -  Camping.  I don’t go that much, but I love being out at night and having fun, especially with a bonfire.

What advice do you have for kids?

Nick -  Always come prepared. Little kids should bring a coloring book and big kids should bring a book that they can read.

When you are older, will you travel more for work or pleasure?

Nick -  Work.  I’ll probably be a businessman. That’s what my dad does.

What has traveling taught you?

Brant -  It’s no fun to wait for a plane.

Nick -  Patience.

I met 11-yr. old Naz at the airport on my way to Louisville, KY.  I was sipping hot green tea when she caught my eye.  She was giggling with her brother and father and she flashed me a smile that lit up the terminal.

When I introduced myself to her family, she was very eager to put away her iPod and sit with me.  Under the watchful eye of her grandmother, Naz answered each of my questions with her hands folded neatly in her lap.  After the interview, she reached out her 11-year old arm to shake hands with me and politely said, ‘It was nice to speak with you, Elisabeth.  This was fun.’  Her mature response left me smiling and a bit amazed.  Naz’s responses to my questions about travel are below.

I love to travel because it is fun to go to different places and seeing everything that is new to me.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled?

Florida because it is so hot and sunny and its beautiful!

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

10 days.  Not too long or too short

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

Probably a toothbrush.

What kinds of things do you learn when you are traveling?

Who is our favorite person to travel with?

My mom because she always comes prepared.

What kind of vacation is your favorite?

I like staying at a hotel.  They always have great service where I go.  And I don’t have to make my bed.

What advice do you have for kids?

Always stay close to your parents.

What advice do you have for parents that take their kids traveling?

Take your kids to more places that are fun for them.  Like maybe an indoor pool, a zoo, a huge playground, or a great museum.

When you are older, will you travel more for work or pleasure?

Probably for pleasure, but I have no clue what I want to do.

What has traveling taught you?

It has taught me that many places are different than where I live.  I am always surprised at how different we are, but we are really just the same.

Ryan - Traveling it is better than everything else.  You should try it.

Katie – When I was little, I was afraid of flying and planes.  Now, I am much braver and not as scared.  I have also learned to trust the people that I travel with.

Tyler and Me on Top of Mammoth Mountain

I spent a week with my family in Mammoth Lakes last week and had a blast.  I was thrilled to meet my new nephew, Tristan (2 months old) and spend some time with my 9 year old nephew, Tyler.  On our ride home from Mammoth, I asked Tyler these questions about travel.

Do you like to travel? Why or why not?

Yes. I like to enjoy nature and spend time with my family.

What is your favorite part about traveling? Least favorite part?

Hanging out with my family. The part I don’t like about traveling is going into forests with bears.  It’s kind of spooky.

Where is your favorite place that you have traveled to? Why?

Disneyland because it has my favorite rides like Indiana Jones.  Next time, when I go to Disneyland I am going to go on Space Mountain.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you want to go? Why?

I would go to Egypt.  They have temples there and I’d like to see a temple.  I would like to find trap doors and old things inside.

What is the perfect length of a family trip?

Since we enjoy Tehachapi (our home) so much, I think being away for 5 or 6 days is perfect.

What do you always want to have with you when you are traveling?

I like to bring transformers because they transform into things and I pretend they go on adventures in my imagination.

What kind of vacation is your favorite; ie. camping, hotel, house exchange, safari?

I like staying in a condo.  It is like my house but not.  Every room is new to me and it’s warm inside.  I also like camping at the beach with my grandparents.

What advice do you have for other kids that travel?

I would tell them to go camping.  It is so fun. You get to see new places and play outside.

Who is your favorite person or people to travel with?

I’d say my cousins because they are really fun to be with.

What kinds of things do you learn when you travel?

I learn about new places and find out new things to do.

When you are older, do you think you will travel more with work or on vacation?  What kind of job do you think you might enjoy?

I think I would travel more with vacation and not have a job that makes me travel all around the world.  I could hang out with my family a lot and not have to work away from home.  I would like to work in fitness or be a fireman or work in an office.

What has traveling taught you?

Traveling has taught me that new places are interesting and really fun.  I can have fun being with family and it teaches me new things about places I’ve never heard of.
